When Organisational Values Meet Personal Values: Finding Alignment at Work

Every organisation has values that guide its culture, decisions, and relationships. Similarly, every individual has personal values that influence their behaviour, choices, and sense of purpose. When these two align, work becomes more meaningful, relationships improve, and individuals are more likely to feel fulfilled in their roles.

Personal values are the principles that define who we are, such as honesty, respect, accountability, compassion, and integrity. Organisational values, on the other hand, shape how an institution operates and how its people are expected to work together.

When personal and organisational values complement each other, employees develop a stronger sense of belonging, trust, and commitment. They can contribute confidently, knowing that their work reflects what they believe in. However, when these values conflict, individuals may experience frustration, lose motivation, or struggle to make decisions that feel right.

Finding alignment begins with self-awareness. Understand your core values and evaluate whether your workplace encourages you to practise them. At the same time, learn your organisation’s values and observe whether they are reflected in everyday actions rather than simply displayed on office walls.

Remember, alignment does not mean agreeing with everything. It means working within shared principles while maintaining personal integrity and respecting different perspectives.

Ultimately, a healthy workplace is built when organisational values are not just written statements but lived experiences. When people work in environments that reflect their values, they are better positioned to grow, collaborate, and make a meaningful impact.

“When your values align with your work, your career becomes more than a job; it becomes an expression of who you are.”
